Seven Things: To Give Up or Not To Give Up

What’s Your Seven Things?

This year, is like no other.  It’s a good time to think about life.  Many people are thinking about cutting expenses to save money.  It’s also a great time to think about just where one might want to be in 5 or 10 years from now.

There’s a lot of things we take for granted, like electricity or a warm, comfy bed or a toothbrush or having food available at the snap of the fingers.

Below is a list of things I could give up but don’t want to, things I can live without, and things I have already given up.

7 Things I Don’t Want To Give Up:

    1. My love of dogs:  Dogs provide so much more than just being cute.  They’ve provided joy and unconditional love for my entire life.
    2. Learning:  Books, Youtube and some of my favorite things. When I was a child I used to believe once you finish school, you’re done learning, but that is far from the truth.  If I want to know something I can pick up a book or watch a video and learn anything.
    3. Indoor plumbing:  Although I grew up on a campground and have enjoyed my fair share of camping I also enjoy modern conveniences.  I could live without plumbing, but WHY if you don’t have to?  I simply don’t want to live without plumbing. I’m very thankful we live in modern times with indoor plumbing (and electricity).
    4. GPS: In the old days I used good ole paper maps.  I had no problem reading them and getting to my destination.  (I could even fold it back up again)  I do not want to give up GPS only because I have no sense of direction.  Having an app tell me where to turn and how long it takes to get something is pretty nifty.
    5. Laptop:  I simply love having everything at my fingertips.
    6. Internet:  Same as having a computer.  Having access to people and information through the Internet is a pretty cool thing.
    7. Chocolate:  Don’t mess with me and my chocolate!

7 Things I Could Live Without If I Had To:

    1. Alcohol:  I could take it or leave it.
    2. Soda:  Same. I’ve gotten used to drinking water and I prefer it.  I might have a soda every now and then.
    3. Makeup:  I use very little makeup as it is and could live without it.
    4. Shoes:  I’d be barefoot all the time if I could.  A pair of flip flops or tennis shoes gets me through most days.
    5. Microwave:  It’s easy to push a button and have your food in 60 seconds, but it’s not needed.
    6. Music:  I’m sure someone is saying OMG, but for me I can live without music. I do enjoy music, but I can live without it and often do. Anytime I go for a drive I usually drive in silence.
    7. Cable:  I enjoy entertainment, but I could turn it off if I had to.

7 Things I Have Given Up:

    1. Tea:  Yuck
    2. Premium TV channels:  Paying for extra premium channels like HBO & Showtime are extra savings in my pocket.
    3. Video games:  I just don’t see the fascination with video games.
    4. Massages:  I’ve never had a professional massage and don’t intend on having any in the future.
    5. Pedicures/manicures:  In all my years of life I’ve only had two professional pedicures and one manicure. Again, it’s an expense I don’t waste my money on.
    6. Starbucks:  Starbucks may be a great business, but it’s expensive and coffee really doesn’t taste all that great.
    7. Negativity:  This one requires constant attention with so much negativity and complaining in the world, but it’s worth ditching the negativity.

What about you?  What seven things could you give up to save money or change your life?
